Unraveling Indianas Legends A Journey Through Folklore at the Indiana Historical Society 2The Indiana Historical Society’s latest exhibit, “Indiana Lore: Tracing the Roots of Indiana’s Tall Tales,” located in downtown Indianapolis, explores various local legends from Indiana. Situated on the fourth floor, the exhibit features art from Indianapolis-based artists, the Brian Twins. Visitors can start their journey from either end of the gallery, where they are greeted with a panel that introduces them to the diverse range of tales from different towns across Indiana, each with unique or adapted versions.

The exhibit showcases a variety of legends with storytelling panels and videos of actors recounting these tales in a fireside setting. A notable feature is the “Spot The Myth” flip panel, which encourages visitors to discern fact from fiction in these stories. The stories cover various themes, including cautionary and moralistic tales, and highlight their significance in shaping community understanding and beliefs.

Featured legends include the haunted Hannah House in Indianapolis, known for paranormal activities; the Beast of Busco, a legendary massive snapping turtle; and tales from New Harmony, La Porte, Terre Haute, and Hammond, among others. The Beast of Busco, a particularly intriguing tale, speaks of a giant turtle in Churubusco, leading to the town being nicknamed “Turtle Town USA” and hosting an annual Turtle Days festival. However, the exhibit suggests that while the Beast of Busco might be a myth, the sighting could have been a large alligator snapping turtle, which is rare but possible in the area.

The exhibit immerses visitors in Indiana’s folklore, allowing them to interact with the state’s rich tapestry of legends. General admission to the Indiana Historical Society includes access to this exhibit, along with various other interactive and family-friendly experiences.
